Better how?[edit]

If you ask me, reverting someone's edit deserves a better explanation than "better before."— Unsigned comment by Cdarklock (talkcontribs) at 06:49 on 4 April 2014

"Better before" is actually a fairly common edit summary given by editors for reverts. As to why I reverted this particular edit, we don't put technical information (like scripts, console codes) in articles as it makes NPCs less 'real' per se. We mention that it's possible to do things with the console, but most of the time the specifics are not included. I hope this clears the air some. Also, in the future, please sign your talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). Thanks! •WoahBro►talk 13:42, 4 April 2014 (GMT)
"Better before" is a perfectly adequate explanation of why you may have reverted a stylistic edit, e.g. describing something as "awesome" which would not generally fit the tone of an article. This edit added content, and suggesting that the page is "better" without that content basically implies that having this content in the article makes the article worse. Furthermore, this is not an NPC page, it is a game mechanic page - which is, by nature, artificial. It is not in any way natural that no matter how much most people like you, they will never become available as a spouse, just as it is in no way natural that if your spouse dies you cannot remarry... which is why there is an extensive console script for that later on the page, in the same section, which continues to explicitly reference console commands from the very first bullet point. It makes no sense to suggest that saying "you can use these two simple console commands to make most NPCs available as a spouse" is somehow worse than those on the grounds that it makes NPCs less real. I would expect you to at the very least bring some kind of rational justification to the talk page for the relevant article, as I quite explicitly stated in the long-abandoned discussion there - where support for an exception to the general policy is also specifically discussed. Cdarklock (talk) 00:59, 5 April 2014 (GMT)
  1. It just does not belong there. This has been widely accepted across the site. Marriage is not portrayed as a mechanic on this website, it is treated as a part of the game. Technical information doesn't belong here.
  2. The console information should go on Console if anywhere (I don't know for sure, first thing off the top of my head).
  3. The NPCs that are able to be married are on the page anyway. Why is it so necessary to have this technical information?
  4. Yes, the article was "Better before", not necessarily worse, just not as acceptable as our, UESP's, style.
  5. You revived a 6 month old conversation which is considered a necropost. They are almost always reverted, but if they go unnoticed we usually leave them be. I didn't notice that you made a post to the talk page so I didn't know there was a talk page post about this. Please avoid necroposting in the future. •WoahBro►talk 01:52, 5 April 2014 (GMT)
This makes absolutely no sense and has clearly become some kind of personal thing. I'll be going now. Cdarklock (talk) 02:14, 5 April 2014 (GMT)

Congratulations![edit]

Congratulations, WoahBro! After your successful nomination, I have added you into the patroller group! You may now add the {{User Patroller}} template to your user page to make this distinction clear to all visitors to your user page. And finally, I wish to once again congratulate you. I'm sure you'll fit right in with the rest of our ever diligent patrollers. As a final reminder, please be sure to read up on the patrolling guidelines and any other policy you are unfamiliar with at this time. If you need any help, feel free to ask me, any administrator, or one of your fellow patrollers for assistance. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 02:01, 5 April 2014 (GMT)

Velyanthe sandbox etymology[edit]

You undone my etymology edit Jyggalag but everyone is allowed to edit it.It is ongoing project etymology from wiki page that was once deleted, I edited it before and didn't have problems. Please return my edit.— Unsigned comment by 188.252.138.118 (talk) at 03:33 on 09 May 2014

The reason I undid your edit is because the banner at the top of the page (left there by the sandboxes' owner) says to edit for format, consistency, and to add Skyrim etymologies. Your edit did not fall under any of these criteria left there by Velyanthe, and because it is our policy to not edit other users' sandboxes without their permission, I undid your edit. So no, unless Vely himself is okay with you editing his sandbox, it will stay that way. •WoahBro►talk 12:55, 9 May 2014 (GMT)

Dib-Mar-Kin[edit]

Its there. 5th paragraph: "But she was not stupid, so she sang a song to Dibe-Mara-Kin" --Jimeee (talk) 13:14, 13 May 2014 (GMT)

I see now, Jeancey had my thoughts right on the talk page. I'm not entirely convinced that Dibe-Mara-Kin is Dibella, Mara, and Kynareth, but it makes enough sense. •WoahBro►talk 19:35, 13 May 2014 (GMT)

Silver candlesticks[edit]

Where can you find those silver candlesticks then? I only found them during the one quest. (note that the silver ones are different from the normal candlesticks). --195.169.225.6 13:15, 24 May 2014 (GMT)

That was me btw. Forgot to login. To clarify talking about this edit: http://www.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=Skyrim:Miscellaneous_Items&oldid=1348580 according to the other wiki it can only be found in pinewatch: [1] --Soyweiser (talk) 13:19, 24 May 2014 (GMT)
I just checked in the CK and you're right, that's the only place to find it. Given that it can only be found in the one place, I'd say that makes the location notable. Robin Hood  (talk) 13:49, 24 May 2014 (GMT)
I was just about to say if someone could verify, that'd be great (thanks RH!). Anyways, that's one of those items I could've sworn I've seen elsewhere. Oh well.
Thanks for checking RH. I lack the skills to use the CK to check. --Soyweiser (talk) 17:16, 25 May 2014 (GMT)

Working, but imperfect fix is better than no fix[edit]

Hi, thanks for patrolling the UESP. In your revert of Sonir, you wrote " 'try typing numbers from 00 up' isn't helpful enough to be a fix". I disagree, it is better than no fix. That instruction 'try numbers from 00 up' is not specific to this fix. It is an effective way to deal with RefIDs that start with "xx" (the loading number of the module containing the object), for example "xx019632". It would be good if there was a page that explained what the load order number is, why it changes and how to determine it. I am not aware of such a page. Regards, --85.180.134.78 21:48, 28 May 2014 (GMT)

There is. The page is linked from every ID number that has the variable load number in it (i.e. all the DLC), and if you simply hold the cursor over the xx, a popup appears to explain it. You can find a full page explaining it here. Simply saying try numbers from 00 up is a rather useless fix, when we have pages and ways to explain what the xx actually means. It isn't a fix, and it isn't specific to that bug in any case, so WoahBro was correct to remove it. Jeancey (talk) 22:15, 28 May 2014 (GMT)
Thanks for that pointer. I've added the "try from 00 on up" method to that page. So, how could I miss that link? I think I clicked on the "RefID" field name to find out about ID syntax. That page does link to Skyrim:Form ID, but apparently I did not follow that link. Or I did, and for some reason did not get to the section xx and Add-Ons. Anyway, it would be more direct if the "xx" directly linked to that section. The template in question is Template:ID, adding "#xx and Add-Ons" after ":Form ID" might do that. --85.180.128.126 10:24, 29 May 2014 (GMT)

Sorry for Clogging[edit]

My apologies for clogging up the works. I do use the show preview button frequently, but since I'm new, I had multiple tabs open as I'm editing, and sometimes would submit some info, then have to go back and alter it because I found new information I had to hunt down through multiple sources. It was a newbie mistake, and I didn't realize it would hinder others. I have the brilliant idea of putting everything I find into a table in a Libre Office document, then when I've done all my research and checking, I will double check that everything is accurate before editing a page, so that I don't trouble others. — Unsigned comment by Chocoholic (talkcontribs) at 22:21 on 28 May 2014 (GMT)

Don't worry about it too much, it happens to just about everyone! Just don't make a habit of it :p •WoahBro►talk 22:29, 28 May 2014 (GMT)
(edit conflict) Clogging the Recent Changes isn't always a bad thing. In the case of the Keys edits, it's actually useful to have them grouped into small edits so that any given patroller can verify a few at a time and then patrol just that one edit. That lets us split up the work. Doing one letter at a time is probably a good way to go, but you should definitely try to avoid making multiple edits to the same section if you can. We all make mistakes, of course—sometimes several :)—but it's something to aim for, anyway. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:30, 28 May 2014 (GMT)

Thanks man! I was using the preview button, but I didn't realize that the number of times I edited the page would stack and clutter the Recent Changes section. I just made my final edit to the page, and left a note detailing my edit(s). My apologies for any inconveniences this incident may have caused. Hunter and Gather undo comments[edit]

Persoanlly, I have no issue with the undo, or the person doing the undo, it is more the fact that it is extremely easy and common for people that take pride in a wiki to simply hit the undo than take the time to encourage people to improve the wiki.

What I wrote was correct, I did it (PS3 version) and noticed that this info was missing from the wiki, so I added it. Instead of a thanks for helping, but more info would be nice message, there was simply undo.. that quest leads you to the farm, but it doesn't give you any special ability to enter. Seriously? That is why I took the time to write the info. I walked into the farm, and this is what I did to do it - end of story. The fact that Anil never took the time to test it or never experienced the event in that way does not mean the information should be removed.

It was the fact that Anil implyed I was a liar (by hitting undo and the comment in the undo) that I took offence to. Requesting more info, taking the time to improve or correct what I started would have also been better options. Admins should be encouraging, not discouraging of new users.

Anyway, it does appear that this simple note on a minor quest has caused more tension and wasted time than is really needed. No need to comment, simply remove this comment, like everything else it you like. — Unsigned comment by 203.206.128.41 (talk) at 05:38 on 8 June 2014‎

As a point of clarification, Anil is not an administrator. I think any further recriminations are unneeded at this point, and it's best to just move on to whether the note should be added, as already under discussion on Anil's talk page. Robin Hood  (talk) 05:54, 8 June 2014 (GMT)

Moving pages[edit]

You've moved two images just now and put them up for speedy deletion. One of them was still linked though, so I'm just here reminding that you should check if the images are still used somewhere first, before moving them (and especially before putting them up for deletion). Fortunately I happened to check myself before deleting it. I'm sure it was just a minor mistake on your part, cause otherwise the other image would have been linked too. Just making sure you take extra care for next time, everybody makes mistakes ~ Dwarfmp (talk) 15:50, 27 June 2014 (GMT)

Image captions[edit]

Hiya, yes I've had people's house be changed from Abc House to Abc house, which is as much a proper noun as the Ules ancestral tomb, I tried putting the point that it is a proper noun, but got over ruled. Biffa (talk) 23:08, 6 July 2014 (GMT)

Sticking in my overly large nose here... if you look on the related Served Cold quest stages, the entire location is capitalized. Depends on the whimsey of the developers, I suppose. --Beezer1029 (talk) 00:02, 7 July 2014 (GMT)
"House" is more general than "Ancestral Tomb", per se. While I was patrolling, there were a couple "house"s in the captions that I just left unpatrolled for someone else to come around for a second opinion. Looking back, it looks like all the "house"s have been patrolled and left alone, but "Ancestral Tomb" remains capitalized. If you ask me, house should be capitalized too seeing as it's in the title of the location, but it's just another one of those weird things on the site that's different and will take too long to find and correct all of them if they decide to change it. •WoahBro►talk 05:22, 7 July 2014 (GMT)

Pages for individual shops[edit]

I just thought I'd pop in to mention what we've been doing so far with shops in ESO, with regards to The Traveler's Rucksack‎ and your edit summary shouldn't be a redirect. As it stands, only stores and marketplaces that have a map icon are having pages created for them, as there are just way too many individual shops with too little information about them.

Any shop that is part of a larger store, such as a bag vendor in a bank, and any shop that appears in a marketplace, such as a weaponsmith stall, is being redirected to the store or marketplace page (or, in Silencer's case, redirecting stalls to the page for the vendor; we haven't decided which is better yet). Any opinions on this are welcome! --Enodoc (talk) 16:46, 8 July 2014 (GMT)

I really have no idea with the majority of ESO pages. The reason why I changed the redirect into a page was because it was just a redirect to the NPC, which I really don't think should be redirected there. Personally, I don't think that page should've been created in the first place, but since it already was, there was no point in marking it for deletion. •WoahBro►talk 18:04, 8 July 2014 (GMT)
Yeah that makes sense. Would you perhaps agree that redirecting to the store (in this case, Oaken-Hull's Emporium) would work better than redirecting to an NPC? --Enodoc (talk) 21:33, 8 July 2014 (GMT)
It looks like it might. I had no idea that it was part of a larger marketplace when I did all of this hahaha. •WoahBro►talk 21:53, 8 July 2014 (GMT)

Removed Post[edit]

Hey, I noticed that you removed a post I made (whilst logged out) on Skyrim talk:Brynjolf, providing the summary "unhelpful necropost". I checked the rules, and I was unable to find anything on the subject. Is there a rule specifying that necroposting is not allowed, or that all comments must be "helpful"? If not, would you mind if I readded the comment? Sorry for the trouble, I only ask because I'd like to figure out the cause of the issue I mentioned and if the post is removed, I can't very well do that. :) Spark (talk)

The guideline you're looking for is here. "Unhelpful" refers to the fact that your comment didn't add anything new to the conversation, i.e. didn't confirm/deny a bug involving Brynjolf being able to be harmed. Your comment could've also been removed for being "forum-like" since all you said was that you were creating a mod. Also, we don't cover user-created mods on the site, except for on personal userpages. •WoahBro►talk 20:21, 8 July 2014 (GMT)
Ah, thank you for letting me know. Although, the intent of the comment was not to advertise my mod, but I understand now why you removed it. And thanks for the welcome :) Spark (talk)

Removed my Post[edit]

Maybe I should have amended the relevant talk page, even though it didn't mention any bug? Kellynne (talk) 22:17, 20 July 2014 (GMT)

You created your post on the New Page Requests page, which is not the place for talking about bugs. That place is only for requesting pages that don't already exist on the wiki to be created. •WoahBro►talk 22:24, 20 July 2014 (GMT)
Yeah, I get that. I was actually requesting a page be made to discuss/make people aware of this bug, since I lost 2 hours to redo the quest and get the sword. I realize now that I should have just added to the talk page. Sorry about that. Kellynne (talk) 22:38, 20 July 2014 (GMT)

At 28 images with only one link apiece (at least in the ones I looked at), I suspect it'd work out about the same for you to move them manually or for me to program the bot. I hope you don't mind, but I was bored and saw this, so I moved it. The reason it says it was edited by WoahBro yesterday is because it is the same file name as what you uploaded yesterday. The speedy delete tag was there because when a page is moved, the original page becomes a redirect. I hope this made sense! ~ Ad intellige (talk) 19:33, 28 September 2014 (GMT)

Image upload[edit]

Hello! I'd like to upload a new picture of Vila Theran npc, after my mistakes were pointed out. I have made a picture suitable for the site standarts, but I can't upload it now because the new image is jpg, and the Destination filename shows png, which I can't edit. I'm not yet used to the UESP rules, so what should I do to edit the picture? Thanks. Kruntika (talk) 13:04, 22 October 2014 (GMT)

If you click on the old image you've already uploaded, there should be a link that says Upload a new version of this file directly under the File History section. Unless of course this is what you already tried to do, in which case, just upload it as a new file with the same exact name except instead of .png type .jpg
My internet connection cut out right as I was typing this, so hopefully this helps before it's too late! •WoahBro►talk 15:01, 22 October 2014 (GMT)
It helped, thank you! Indeed "Upload a new version of this file" was what I tried to do. And I hesitated before adding picture as a completely new file, but if that's what you suggest, I'll do it now. Thanks again! Kruntika (talk) 15:25, 22 October 2014 (GMT)
I'm not 100% positive that's the correct and/or standard procedure, but I'm glad it worked! If you have any questions, feel free to ask myself, any mentor, or really just about anybody! Also, the newer image you uploaded is just a tad too small. Don't worry about it though! I'll leave a tag on it for someone to upload a larger image at a later time. This one will be just fine for now :) •WoahBro►talk 15:43, 22 October 2014 (GMT)
Just so you both know, that was the correct thing to do. Since they were different formats, you cannot upload one over the other. Jeancey (talk) 19:16, 22 October 2014 (GMT)
Cool, thanks Jeancey! •WoahBro►talk 21:45, 22 October 2014 (GMT)

Spells[edit]

The spells section is already inconsistent across followers and I'm trying to make it uniform and following the same colour scheme as the magic pages. All three pages I have already edited had different methods of listing spells or none at all.--Rainer1 (talk) 03:30, 31 October 2014 (GMT)

That's probably fine for the time being. There is usually a site-wide project created sometime after each game's release, and one was made for quests and houses, but with The Elder Scrolls Online being announced and then released, we had to shift gears away from Skyrim to begin all the prep work that comes along with the release. A project discussion probably should be initiated to begin organisation of the NPC articles sometime, so that we can organise the NPC pages consistently, so I might make a CP post bringing this up in more detail, then we can discuss the different styles, layouts, what content is or isn't desirable to share, etc. -damon  talkcontribs 03:43, 31 October 2014 (GMT)

IP Advice[edit]

Hey WoahBro, just some quick advice. Whenever you see an IP act suspiciously, such as posting on the talk page for an IP that has been blocked for months, the links at the bottom of an anonymous user's contribution page are your best friend. Like with 24.84.137.31, by comparing the address with information from 96.49.236.201, it becomes clear that they are the same person (same writing style, same physical location, same service provider). It's definitely not the simplest thing to catch, but when you do, you can save admins a lot of time, and feel like a genius in the process! --AKB Talk Cont Mail 21:06, 12 November 2014 (GMT)

Hm, I've used those IP tracers before but didn't even think about using them for this case. Nice catch! •WoahBro►talk 22:49, 12 November 2014 (GMT)

Yes, well...[edit]

1: I didn't actually mean for the original contributors to see my post, just for someone to see. And I understand how irritating necroposting can be (I'm actually having problems right now with a guy on another site over an argument I had several months ago with a completely different user), but just deleting someone's post just seems rude. Simply responding to me and telling me not to bother with it would've sufficed. If I wasn't supposed to reply, then why wasn't it archived?

2: Don't you mean if it wasn't stated in-universe or by someone at Bethesda, then it can't be considered canon?

3: Well, the patrollers and admins are way too trigger-happy with the "Undo" button. How about instead of outright reverting everything I post, why not tell them to either fix it so that it seems more appropriate for the page, check the lore/games to see if I'm right or not, or only delete the parts that actually are speculation?

Because some of the stuff I added to Lore:Dremora was by all rights canonical information (the Xivilai/Dremora dynamic, and female Dremora being more frequent during the Second Era, ala The Elder Scrolls Online). Because it just seems like they're treating everything I post as speculation, and it's really getting annoying and it insults my intelligence. Bauglir100 (talk) 21:04, 13 December 2014 (GMT)

For future reference, it's easier to keep conversations on one talk page.
In regards to 1, talk pages are only archived when they've gotten extremely long (the best example is the Community Portal, which is probably due for archiving). And what else are we supposed to do other than to revert them if they're pointless? Like I mentioned in my post on your page, the entire topic is forum-like, another reason to remove them as speculative conversations belong in the forums.
2, you got me there. I've fixed that and a link that didn't want to work. Simple typos :p
And 3, I'm by no means a lore expert which is why I usually don't patrol/revert, so I don't have a good answer for that. The best thing to do in this situation is to make a post on the talk page of Lore:Dremora or the person(s) who are reverting it.
I hope you don't think I'm trying to be mean or a bad guy, I'm just trying to make sure you know how we do things here considering we're a great deal different than other wiki sites on the web. •WoahBro►talk 21:23, 13 December 2014 (GMT)
Hiya, not wishing to stick my oar in unnecessarily, but as someone who has fallen out with people on occasion and become frustrated with posts being undone or massively changed. I do have to admit that it is easy to feel picked on, when 99.99% of the time that isn't the case. Especially if you haven't posted much or on a particular type of page especially lore, then it is easy to make mistakes in the way posts should be written. All I'd say is a couple of things I gained from, were asking anyone who reverted posts of mine what were the reasons. If done in a calm, positive manner and making it clear it's so you can make better/more acceptable posts in the future. Then you generally get constructive explanations fairly quickly. A lot of the patrollers have a lot to do and little time to do it in. They welcome help and generally want to encourage people to add content. The second thing that helped me was reaedingsome of the help pages, especially the style guides. Biffa (talk) 23:16, 15 December 2014 (GMT)
