Athires Hlaalu is a Dark Elf noble and the Grandmaster of Great House Hlaalu. He can be found along with his bodyguard Pargus Marethi in the Grandmaster Quarters deep in the Second Family Manor in Narsis. Current High Hlaalu, member of the Second Hlaalu Family and descendant of Hlaalu Pasoroth, Athires was instrumental in expanding House Hlaalu's influence and wealth to its current dominant state. Despite his historical achievements, however, he has become more and more secluded as of late, delegating most of his day-to-day orders as Grandmaster to the House Vizier, Ereven Peronys.
Although he offers little for low-ranking House members, the player will eventually be directed to him as part of the House Hlaalu end-cap questline to secure his vote for becoming the next Grandmaster. To convince Athires to step down, the player must help him investigate his strange prophetic dreams.
Athires wears his unique exquisite shirt, a pair of exquisite pants, a pair of gilded glass boots and the enchanted High Hlaalu Amulet. He wields a Daedric wakizashi.
Aside from his natural resistance to fire and the sanctuary provided by his ancestors, Athires knows no spells.

Dialogue[edit]
- Greetings:
- "Hm? What do you want?"
- advancement:
- [If you are not a member of House Hlaalu] "Do I know you?"
- [Before the rank of Councilman] "I do not deal with those below Councilman rank. Seek another councilor's approval."
- [After the rank of Councilman, before beginning Hlaalu Grandmaster] "Admirable as your aspiration is, %PCRank, you have neither my support nor the support of the council. However, both could be earned. Vizier Ereven Peronys in the Narsis Measurehall will assist you from here. Off you go."
- Almalexia:
- "Almalexia, the mother of mercy, reminds me to be generous to the businessmen who fail where I succeed. Generosity can bring benefits, as the Empire has shown in Morrowind. She is a warrior too, of course. In my early days, before I had properly secured my ventures, I sometimes had to think on that aspect of her as I steeled my resolve in the face of recessions and bank runs. The thrice-sealed house withstands the storm. House Hlaalu has weathered this era better than some. In that way, we are truly blessed."
- Athires Hlaalu:
- "You don't say."
- Atran Oran:
- "Councilman Atran Oran is the owner of the Oran Plantation, one of the largest and richest plantations in all of Morrowind. For a man of his prodigious brawn, he is not lacking in brain. He made quite a stir here in Narsis in his day, rising up from an arena pit to his current lofty council seat. I have decided to place him on the Thirr facing the Indoril, and have enjoyed many peaceful days since."
- Background:
- "I am the High Hlaalu: Athires Hlaalu, Grandmaster of House Hlaalu, Prince of Narsis, Patriarch of the Second Hlaalu Family, and whatever other titles one accumulates if he lives as long as I have. What do you want?"
- business:
- [If you are not a member of House Hlaalu] "Mine is none of yours."
- [Before beginning Hlaalu Grandmaster] "My orders are dictated to Vizier Ereven Peronys, %PCRank. See him at the Measurehall regarding specific tasks or affairs of the House."
- Camonna Tong:
- "The Camonna Tong is an ancient and powerful Dunmer institution. It has taken on a hard stance against all things foreign and Imperial, holding to what they describe as traditional ideals. This is to say that they prefer to retain their power, and consider Imperial law to stand in the way of that, while Imperial opposition has won them many allies in Morrowind.'"'
- Fethas Hlaalu:
- "Fethas Hlaalu is my nephew and the current Duke of Narsis. I am sure he is doing a great job in that role and has a bright career ahead of him. My focus is on House Hlaalu."
- First Hlaalu Family:
- "The First Family is the branch descended from Narsara Hla-Alu's first son Andrus. He took over his mother's duty of caring for the burial places carved into this mesa, and since then the family has been the stewards of the Narsis Catacombs. It was Andrus' nephew, Tharel, who founded the actual city of Narsis and became progenitor of the Second Hlaalu Family."
- Galvus Pottreid:
- "The latest Imperial appointee to Proconsul in a long and illustrious line of gormless politicians."
- [If Galvus Pottreid is dead] "The former Proconsul of Morrowind, currently the Proconsul of a small patch of dirt outside Narsis."
- Hlaalu councilors:
- "We print a book every year just so people can stay informed on who the members of the Hlaalu council are. Read it."
- Hlaalu Pasoroth:
- "Hlaalu Pasoroth was a High Hlaalu of the Second Era. I fondly remember the tales my father would tell me of his unusual rise to the position. In his youth, he set out to Cyrodiil with a sizable retinue and war chest and took up mercenary work. There, he not only found profit but also won territory and forged connections which have benefited House Hlaalu to this day. He later sold his land and returned to Narsis to be elected Grandmaster. The royal family of Morrowind directly descends from Hlaalu Pasoroth."
- House Dres:
- "House Dres are the great saltrice magnates of Morrowind and cherished trading partners of House Hlaalu. They are very consistent and struggle with change, but they don't let that dampen their pride."
- House Hlaalu:
- "We are the foremost of Morrowind's five Great Houses. We have been granted command over the Grand Council, the current king bears our name, and where the other houses falter, we flourish. I have contributed to that success in my own way as Grandmaster of House Hlaalu. We are a house that always looks forward. I shall see to it that its successes do not end with me."
- House Indoril:
- "House Indoril were once the dominant house on Morrowind's Grand Council. They talk big. And long. Endlessly, even. But their mettle is real, and they stand by what they say. They have a clear vision for Morrowind. Morrowind is forging a different path, but it is wise to learn from the Indoril. From a distance."
- House Redoran:
- "House Redoran are the stalwart defenders of Morrowind, and always good in a fight. Many Hlaalu recruit mercenaries and guards from House Redoran's military elite. They are good to have at hand, but in times of peace, they require a lot of support. In these times of peace, we have been supporting them very much indeed."
- House Telvanni:
- "House Telvanni is a house of wizards and bugherds whose chief business is minding their own business. In a way, we get along quite well."
- Indoril Ilvi:
- "Indoril Ilvi is our primary adversary in the Indoril Council and lord of the east bank of the Thirr. He is adept enough to be an inconvenience to us, but his fellow councilors are not all of one mind."
- Ivul Hleryn:
- "Councilman Ivul Hleryn is the principal councilman of Hlerynhul. Of the Dunmer councilors, he has perhaps most comprehensively embraced the path of progress. He controls Hlerynhul like a personal fief, fostering its arts and tradesmen, closely monitoring the trade that passes through it and extracting the greatest control and profit out of it. He is useful to have as an ally, but generally indifferent of those he does not consider of worth."
- latest rumors:
- "From me? How much are you willing to offer? No, more than that. More than that. Forget it."
- little advice:
- "Fools act rashly, but cowards miss all opportunities."
- little secret:
- [Disposition ≥ 60] "Orvas Dren casts three shadows. If ever you are on Vvardenfell and must deal with the man, do not think his armor is his only defense."
- Mervis Llarel:
- [If you are a member of House Hlaalu] "Mervis Llarel is the de facto leader of the Camonna Tong in Narsis. People may dismiss him for being overtly brutish or cruel, but he is conniving as well."
- [If you are a member of House Hlaalu, and Mervis Llarel is dead] "Mervis Llarel was the de facto leader of the Camonna Tong in Narsis. They haven't named a successor, but I suspect many will defer to my judgment in the end."
- Morrowind:
- "Morrowind is the home of the Dunmer people. It has been since Saint Veloth led the Velothi from the Summerset Isles to these lands. Its name is newer, signifying its incorporation by treaty as one of the eight Imperial provinces. It is jointly governed by the Empire, the Temple, and the Grand Council, on which sit five Great Houses: House Hlaalu, House Indoril, House Redoran, House Telvanni, and House Dres. House Hlaalu is chief among the houses on the council. I am chief among the members of the house."
- my trade:
- "I am a noble of Great House Hlaalu. In the grand mercantile traditions of Great House Hlaalu, I am a merchant prince. From birth, I studied the language of commerce and learned the art of the deal. I honed my craft as a banker, a trader, an administrator. My descent from Hlaalu Pasoroth merely embellished my achievements. Blood alone does not secure success in Great House Hlaalu. Upon my father's death, I made full use of the merit and skill I had accumulated to ensure I was voted into my current role. And I was. Unanimously."
- Orvas Dren:
- [If you are a member of House Hlaalu] "Orvas Dren is the Kingpin of the Camonna Tong. Once a powerful figure in Narsis politics, he decided to take part in the colonization effort in Vvardenfell. His large estate on the island approaches the scale of Atran Oran's and was built in a fraction of the time. From what I gather, the influence he exerts on the local council is that of a big fish in a small pond."
- [If you are a member of House Hlaalu, and Orvas Dren is dead] "Orvas Dren is the former Kingpin of the Camonna Tong. He has left his mark on Great House Hlaalu, for better or worse. And it seems someone saw fit to leave their mark on him."
- Saint Veloth:
- "Saint Veloth the Pilgrim led the Dunmer out of Summerset Isles to Morrowind, and in doing so, he showed his people a new way forward. House Hlaalu, in his tradition, seeks to establish a future for Morrowind. Many of its members, myself included, hold Saint Veloth in very high esteem."
- Saritha Hlaalu:
- "My capable daughter Saritha Hlaalu may be found downstairs. Perhaps you have already had the opportunity to do business with her. Perhaps you will in the future. Either way, you will be in good hands."
- [Disposition ≥ 60] "My daughter is capable, but unenthusiastic. I do not intend to tie her down in the long term, but in my role as High Hlaalu, I must allot resources where they are most needed. I still need her support."
- [If Saritha Hlaalu is dead] "I did not wish to tie my daughter down to the house. Nor did I wish for her to be freed from it on these terms. I hope she will find peace beyond the waiting door."
- Second Hlaalu Family:
- "The Second Family are the founders of Narsis and of House Hlaalu. We revere Narsara Hla-Alu and her sons for leading the clans here and shepherding them in the early days of the settlement of Resdayn. But it was only when her grandson Tharel Hlaalu vassalized all the other tribes and established the city of Narsis atop this mesa that House Hlaalu truly began."
- Seyda Neen:
- "The Seyda Neen was a flagship commanded by Brevur Hlaalu of the Seventh Family. While chasing a holy vision of Veloth, the ship was dashed upon the rocks and all aboard perished. We built the Grand Pharos on the shore of Vvardenfell from its wreckage, and embedded the salvaged glass shards in our faces to honor its memory."
- Sotha Sil:
- "Sotha Sil, patron of scholars, inspires his people to study. Early in my career, I took Sotha Sil as my model when preparing for my final mercantile exams. His example encouraged me to continue my efforts, to master the abacus, and never to lose hope. I received a perfect score. Of course, when later I related this story to a priest of Sotha Sil, he smiled. Sotha Sil is in all his people's hearts and minds, and sees all, and according to him, my father had already paid off my rector before the exams began."
- Temple:
- "The Temple is the native religion of civilized Morrowind and one of its three main governing entities. The three God-Kings of the Dunmer stand at its head, known together as the Tribunal: Almalexia, Sotha Sil, and Vivec. But they have not been seen publicly for some time. In their stead, a vast array of priests and officials hold sway. Many come from House Indoril, and it is sometimes hard to tell whether their actions truly reflect the intent of the Tribunal rather than their personal loyalties."
- Tereldyn Hlaalu:
- "He is the patriarch of the First Hlaalu Family. He doesn't care much for either politics or revelry, so I only see him at official functions nowadays. No doubt he has his nose in some dusty book or some dusty tomb right now."
- the Empire:
- "The Third Empire of Man has decided to take a softer approach to Morrowind than its previous incarnations, which has earned it a most generous treaty and permanent presence in these lands. House Hlaalu has itself greatly benefited from that treaty, and continues to do so to this day. So we are, of course, always very grateful and cooperative partners to the Empire's various endeavors in these lands."
- Tholer Andas:
- "Councilman Tholer Andas is the principal councilor of Bal Foyen and a very effective businessman. He comes from Indoril lineage, but rather than let that hinder his activities in House Hlaalu, he has leveraged it to our benefit, securing the coast of the Inner Sea for us and making significant contributions to the effort to colonize Vvardenfell. He is a difficult man to cross, particularly in his own territory."
- Tribunal:
- "The Tribunal are the God-Kings Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil. Some within the Temple, speaking on their behalf, condemn House Hlaalu for seeking Fortune and Profit. Any good Hlaalu would do well to return to the sources and read the words of the Tribunal directly. What do they stand for? What can they do for you? How can you improve yourself by emulating their example? One can find much value past simply repeating the liturgies."
- Vivec:
- "When one has worked in commerce as long as I have, one has seen many charts and graphs, reports of numbers and projections, and been asked to interpret them. The interpreting is easy; summoning the will to do so is hard. Interpreting them for others, in the right way, is an art. A very rewarding one. Vivec the Poet reminds us that there is art in all things in life. When one remembers this, one can find the will to do anything."
- Vvardenfell:
- "Vvardenfell is a barren island of ash and wild animals and worse, but surprisingly rich in resources. We have seen fit to expand our holdings on its more fertile southwestern shore, where we have even managed to establish some saltrice plantations. The crop flourishes in few environments, so though the project is in its early stages, it holds great promise for House Hlaalu."
