Crocodiles, are large, semi-aquatic, carnivorous reptiles with thick hides that can be found in swamps and near rivers throughout Tamriel.[1][2] In the Argonian tongue of Jel, they are known as rormasu, which translates to "big-mouthed reptile that blinks above water". Redguards colloquially know them as marsh dunerippers, while some Khajiit apparently known them as four-clawed daedroths, though the humor in this title is thought to be lost in the translation from Khajiiti. Crocodiles are described as having "ancient skin", with one Argonian claiming they roamed Mundus before his people did.[2]

Variants[edit]

Crocodiles are known to grow throughout their lives, as such, some have been known to grow to massive sizes.[3] An especially large breed native to the island of Solstice can be identified by the fine scale pattern near the tip of their tail.[4] The Helstrom crocodile was another incredibly large variant that went extinct during the Great Burn of 1E 2828 in the Blackwater War.[5] White crocodiles are known to be extremely rare.[6]

Uses[edit]

There are many uses for the parts harvested from a crocodile. Necklaces made from their teeth may be worn by young Argonians during their maturation trial.[7] Crocodile hide makes for both sturdy and attractive armor,[8] as well as travel bags,[6] while baked crocodile tongue is a dish commonly found in Black Marsh.[9]

The skulls of the extinct Helstom crocodiles were used by the Dead-Water Tribe as a trap for either animals or people.[5] Skeletal crocodile tails were popularly sold by street vendors in Leyawiin in the third century of the Second Era.[4]

Crocodiles have been domesticated by Argonians, for instance the the Dead-Water tribe takes crocodile hatchlings and raises them to appear strong and spark fear, though some secretly find them cute to keep as pets.[10]
