Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
Kharal gra-Ratash stands outside Vandirelyon, and is ready to begin her investigation. She explains that her purpose here is to try and recover the Ghost Ring, a powerful artefact once used by a notable Chimer sorceror. She's unable to unlock the level 100 door leading into the lower levels however, and asks you to help. A Scroll of Ekash's Lock Splitter will be handy here, as will a masterful Security skill. If you have neither, your options are to take Kharal's suggestions of either finding another entrance or asking the squatters (now in Ald Iuval) about a key.
For a back entrance, consider levitation - the lock on the door on top of the stronghold is much weaker. You can then pick up the Vandirelyon Entrance Key from a shelf in the westernmost room of the Upper Level.
If you want to go the squatter route, find Llandora Arani in Ald Iuval. Her new squat spot is in a ruined hut west of the settlement's Morag Tong guildhall. Asking her about Vandirelyon will reveal that there once was a key, which she threw into the river by Hladri Winery after fellow squatters got hurt by traps within the ruins. This key still lies among rocks in the middle of the stretch of the river between Vandirelyon and Hladri Winery. A Detect Key spell can be useful here. Once you have the key, unlock the door and enter the stronghold.
However you get inside, you'll need to get to the Vault area. The approach to this is on a section of the Lower Level that is only accessible from the Upper Level. That approach (the room on the eastern side of the Lower Level) features another high-level locked door however. The key to this door lies just out of reach behind the bars, on a platter. Telekinesis is needed here, or you'll otherwise have to unlock the door another way.
Once through this locked door, proceed through the cave tunnel into the Vault. On entering, you'll immediately come up against a blue, floating sigil that blocks further ingress. At this point, return to Kharal and update her on Vandirelyon. She'll muse on the sigil barrier, noting that a matching sigil amulet can likely be found in Vandirelyon's propylon chamber - a chamber apparently barred to you. The only way into it will be through the use of a Vandirelyon propylon index. She asks that you consult with Folms Mirel in the Caldera guildhall to see if he knows of that index's location.
Caldera is on Vvardenfell, so you've a long trek ahead of you. Speak to Folms once there and he'll narrow down the Vandirelyon propylon index's last known location as being near Sadrathim. He'll also note that you can use it at Hlorandar once found.
Sadrathim is south-southeast of Othmura, and will have been marked on your map. Go there. Asking about Vandirelyon will see you pointed to the town trader, Terenu Aryon. With 50+ disposition she'll recall selling the index to somebody who wanted to use it as an offering at the nearby Llaren Ancestral Tomb. This is north of town, across the river. Enter and seek out the final chamber, with the mural of St. Veloth on its southwestern wall. The Vandirelyon Propylon Index lies atop one of the three altars here. Take it.
You now need to go to Hlorandar to use the index. That will also have been marked on your map, and lies on the river roughly southwest of Llaren Ancestral Tomb. Enter Hlorandar's Propylon Chamber and activate the Vandirelyon Propylon with your propylon index in your inventory. You'll be teleported to the Vandirelyon Propylon Chamber, and can find the Vehk Sigil Amulet of Entry that you need on a table in this room.
To exit the chamber, either teleport back to Hlorandar, or else pick up the shovel next to the door and activate the rubble near the door to clear it. Then return to Vandirelyon's Vault area. On reaching the floating sigil, cast the Vekh Sigil Amulet of Entry spell. You'll now be able to walk through the sigil, which will disappear. You can now go further into the vault.
Another obstruction soon presents itself however. A cave in has blocked access to a section of the vault, and the only way to this section is to swim through an underwater tunnel that will require some means of Water Breathing to survive in. Look for the room with a pool, dive in and enter the tunnel in the western wall. You'll come to a room watched over from ledges by Dremora Sharpshooters. Levitation is required to access the way forward.
After this, you'll arrive at the (near) final chamber. Many Daedra and the skeleton, Belehudzar are present here. All will attack. Defeat them, and then search Belehuzar's body. It bears the fabled Ghost Ring. Return to Kharal with this and speak to her about the Ghost Ring topic. You'll have the option of handing it over to her or insisting on keeping it. She'll teach you the spell Kharal's Call Aid if you do, along with granting you 4,000 gold for your efforts. Refusing will see you expelled from the Mages Guild, unless you happen to be the Arch-Mage, in which case Kharak can only grumble.

10 | Kharal gra-Ratash told me that the purpose of her expedition to Vandirelyon was to search for an artifact known as the Ghost Ring that her research has confirmed is somewhere deep within the stronghold. However, the main door has a complex lock on it that Kharal's spells can't open, so she wants me to find a way to get inside.
11 | Kharal gra-Ratash told me that the purpose of her expedition to Vandirelyon was to search for an artifact known as the Ghost Ring that her research has confirmed is somewhere deep within the stronghold. She wants me to enter Vandirelyon and retrieve the ring for her.
20 | I asked Llandora Arani if she knew anything about a key to Vandirelyon's main entrance. She said that she had the key until a few of the other squatters got hurt while trying to explore the stronghold, after which she locked the entrance and threw the key in the river near the Hladri Winery.
30 | Kharal gra-Ratash suggested I look for a key to the deeper levels of Vandirelyon elsewhere in the stronghold, using detection and telekinesis spells if necessary.
40 | I told Kharal gra-Ratash about the daedric sigil gate blocking entrance to Vandirelyon's vault. She was frustrated by the news and told me that it could only be bypassed by a matching sigil amulet, which she believes to be kept in the now blocked-off propylon chamber. She suggested I use a propylon index to access the chamber and mentioned that Folms Mirel would probably know more about the propylon and its location.
50 | Folms Mirel said that while he couldn't give me the exact location of Vandirelyon's propylon index, he did know that it found its way to somewhere in the southern Coronati Basin near Sadrathim. He suggested asking around there for anyone who might know more and noted that the index could be used at Hlorandar, another stronghold in the area.
51 | Folms Mirel was impressed that I had already found the Vandirelyon propylon index. He told me that it could be used at Hlorandar, another stronghold in the southern Coronati Basin.
60 | Terenu Aryon in Sadrathim told me that a pilgrim to the nearby Llaren ancestral tomb had bought the Vandirelyon propylon index from her and gone to the tomb to place it as an offering. She told me that the tomb was just north of town along the road, on a fork to the right.
70 | Kharal gra-Ratash suggested using a water breathing spell to look around the flooded section of Vandirelyon and see if there are any passages into the vault from there.
100 | I retrieved the Ghost Ring from Vandirelyon and gave it to Kharal gra-Ratash. She thanked me and taught me a spell to summon two Dremora as a reward.
101 | I retrieved the Ghost Ring from Vandirelyon, but refused to give it to Kharal gra-Ratash. She was furious with me and expelled me from the Mages Guild.
102 | I retrieved the Ghost Ring from Vandirelyon, but refused to give it to Kharal gra-Ratash. She was angry with my decision, but deferred to my authority as Arch-Mage. |
