The Masqued Captain

The Masqued Captain is an Imperial Thief found aboard his ship, Crypsis, docked at Olvos Isle.

A noted corsair, he is described by The Abecean Monitor as the "ascendant kingpin of the pirate world", with a career that has (by its account) spanned six years, and terrorized the Abecean Sea. He is responsible for sinking at the very least the West Navy galleon named TEM Red Tempest, and the wealth that the Masqued Captain has gathered within Norinia - the location of his treasure hoard - suggests a very long and profitable career.

The Masqued Captain is encountered over the course of two quests. The first is the bounty to bring him in. If you successfully take him alive, he will escape from Goldstone's prison the next day (see the Abecean Monitor article. The second quest concerns the retrieval of a precious Varla Stone from the ruins of Garlas Malatar. The Masqued Captain will pay you for this service with King Claudius' Signet Ring - an item of jewelry belonging to the king of Anvil, who went missing some ten years ago (as noted in this article).

While the Masqued Captain has an explanation for his possession of the ring - having apparently encountered the king after he turned to a life of crime, it is possible that he himself is King Claudius Conomorus. Evidence in support of this includes his unique head, which in game files is labeled T_B_Imp_UNI_HairConomorousPC, although this may be left over from earlier development plans.

The captain does not keep all his treasures in Norinia, or the hold of the Crypsis. He bears a few on his person too, including the Masque of the Captain, Ebonweave Boots and an Adamantine Scimitar.

• In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, there was also a missing king of Anvil who turned out to be the masked leader of the Thieves Guild, with the Masqued Captain likely being a nod to this plot point.
