Your Next Job

You can start this quest by speaking with Caspus Quillan about jobs after you've completed Alessian Bronze Boots. Up next is another larceny job: Caspus wants you to bring him a brass astrolabe. He'll tell you that the local chapel, the Chapel of the West Wind, should have one somewhere inside it, but if that proves too challenging to nab that you could try finding one on the Strident Coast. Though Caspus doesn't direct you to, you can ask your fellow guild thieves for advice. Vandelenwe, though well informed on the uses of astrolabes, doesn't have much to add on where to find one. Charles, however, will have two suggestions for you: that you could probably find an astrolabe in Anvil and that you should bring a potion of telekinesis with you to make stealing the astrolabe a bit easier; the local Guild of Mages is known to keep a few in stock. You can skip asking Cassanda for advice, since she doesn't have anything worth selling you this time.

Procuring an Astrolabe

From here you could go to the Chapel of the West Wind in Charach. Your guildmates were correct; an astrolabe can be found in the chapel's basement, on a bookshelf in the office of Tynul Valelian. However, even with a potion of telekinesis, it may prove difficult to steal the astrolabe without either Tynul Valelian or Salvanus Lathus, who is standing outside the office, noticing you. You could simply accept that and steal the astrolabe in plain sight; by leaving a mark at the Thieves Guild base at Duskwatch Keep, you can steal the astrolabe, recall back, take care of your bounty, and have the astrolabe turned in before anyone has a chance to even react to your theft. However, some thieves which prefer to take a stealthier approach to their jobs might find such a method distasteful; such individuals will need to look elsewhere for an astrolabe.

One location that might please such thieves is the Chapel of the Tranquil Sky, located in Anvil's Port Quarter. An astrolabe can be found in the basement bedroom of the chapel, behind a locked (35) door. Unlike in Charach's chapel, this room has no one in it and no one is standing outside to see you pick the lock. It's a fairly simple task to break in and abscond with the astrolabe unnoticed.

Return to Caspus

However you go about acquiring an astrolabe, once you've found one it's time to return to Caspus. Upon giving him the astrolabe, Caspus with reward you with the Ring of the Mystical Bandit.
