Companions provide a passive buff when they are active. Incase of Mirri Elendis the buff is called Mirri's Expertise. It is described as "Treasure chests found through treasure maps and in the Overland have a 30% chance to provide additional loot from hidden compartments". This buff can also be gained permanently by completing the Treasured Comrade achievement.
