Rules and Regulations[edit]
At various times he'll simply say:
- "Not now, please. I have a great deal on my mind."
When you approach him, you will overhear a conversation between him and General Gavryn Redoran.
- General Gavryn Redoran: "Don't be foolish, Captain. Boredom is the only danger these soldiers face."
- Captain Valec Doronil: "General, we must enforce protocol. If—"
- General Gavryn Redoran: "Enough! Not another word about protocol, Captain. Remember your place!"
After finding General's Order 12008, you will need to speak to Doronil at the training yard to inform him of the general's decree:
- "Captain Doronil, at your service."
- A moment of your time, Captain?
- "A moment is all I can spare, I'm afraid. The General is already greatly displeased with me."
- What did you do wrong?
- "I wish I knew. I've always served dutifully, followed the will of the Tribunal, and defended the fortress with honor.
I've even been enforcing the General's nonsensical orders, usually against my better judgment." - I saw a decree on the General's desk. He intends to execute you for insubordination.
- "I am a soldier, loyal to my house and the Ebonheart Pact. I am sworn to obey my superiors without question. I don't have the luxury of questioning orders, no matter how suspect.
If I'm to be executed, so be it. Until then, leave me to my duty."
Speak to him again after you both found the retainer scroll and told him of the bad news:
- "Leave me. I prefer to spend the hours before my death alone."
What Lies Beneath[edit]
After defeating General Gavryn Redoran's impostor, return to the keep where you'll find the captain looking for the general:
- "Where have you been? Where's the General?"
- The General was murdered by the Maulborn and a Dremora took his place. I recovered his signet ring.
- "Of course! The General's madness, the strange sounds coming from the ruins—it all makes sense now. We were so blinded by protocol, we couldn't see it.
I'll assume command immediately and send troops to deal with the Maulborn. Thank you." - Thank Ragna. She knew something was wrong and convinced me to look into it.
- "Just like a headstrong Nord to throw protocol to the wind. Perhaps we could all learn from her.
Excuse me, my friend. I believe I have an officer to promote."
If you exit the conversation before turning in the quest, he will alternatively say:
- "Thank you for your service."
- Ragna knew something was wrong from the start. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)
Ragna Stormcrag will enter the room:
- Captain Valec Doronil: "Ah, Stormcrag. Good timing. Come here!"
- Ragna Stormcrag: "Sorry, Captain. Didn't mean to eavesdrop."
- Captain Valec Doronil: "News of the General's death will spread quickly. We must maintain order."
- Ragna Stormcrag: "More Dark Elf discipline and protocol? That's what caused this mess."
- Captain Valec Doronil: "That's why I want to appoint you as my aide and advisor, so our discipline doesn't blind us again."
- Ragna Stormcrag: "Me? Yes, I'd be happy to help keep the fortress on track."
Afterwards he'll tell you:
- "Superb work. The Pact stands strong thanks to people like you."
Shattered Hopes[edit]
He can later be found at the Pact's camp near Honrich Tower, having a conversation with Ragna Stormcrag. After you defeat Thallik Wormfather and retrive the haft of Wuuthrad, he will disappear.
