Merge with Xbox Page?[edit]

As I have been introduced to Oblivion via the ps3 version (though I played Morrowind on my PC), I'm excited to see this article finally created. However, it seems there's not a lot to say, because the ps3 does not have much specific info that's not already on the xbox360 page.

I'd like to hear what editors with a better understanding of wiki structure think, but why not have a "consoles" article linked from the main page, with the differences common to both consoles from the PC described. This article in turn provides links to one specific article for each console. This seems more logical to me, and it also serves to keep the public one step further from the knowledge that the 360 is light-years ahead of my precious and unreproachable ps3 in offering downloadable Oblivion content.

Also, I'm really sure that someone HAS to have already made a suggestion of this nature, but I couldn't find it.

Also Also, I don't know much wiki terminology yet so forgive me for not using it here, I'm working on it. Livingdocument 01:38, 22 April 2007 (EDT)

I agree this makes a lot more sense. The PS3 page is empty, while the 360's full, and a lot of infos shared. I wont make the change though, as this is definitely something for an experienced user to give the go-ahead to first, as it involves major structural changes to the 360 page. -Lordsword 8 13:32, 22 April 2007 (EDT)
I agree the PS3 page needs to be filled in some more; anyone who is playing on the PS3 is welcome to flesh out the article. I'm not actually so sure, though, that merging with the Oblivion:Xbox 360 page makes sense, because most of that page does not apply to PS3 (Patches, Official Mods, Transferring Game Saves are all Xbox-specific; sections of, or perhaps even all of, Interface Differences, are also Xbox-specific). The only section that really seems to also apply to PS3 is "Missing PC Features", which could just be copied over to here. To me, that seems better than creating a "Consoles" page that contains only that one section, especially since I'd guess most readers would prefer to just to straight to page on their specific console than read through two pages to get the same info. That's my opinion, at least. --NepheleTalk 15:49, 22 April 2007 (EDT)
My apologies for adding bad info that the paintbrush glitch was fixed on the PS3. I was wrong - the glitch is still there. — Unsigned comment by 66.92.162.116 (talk) at 05:06 on 25 April 2007‎
I agree with Nephele that a whole new page called Consoles VS the PC could be made that would be able to filter both Xbox and PS3 pages down to what the actual unique differences are. I myself am a PS3 player of Oblivion and I wanted to know what other people think of my reformatting of the PS3 Page as it was pretty much a bunch of chicken scratch and now looks more like a wiki page.--Most Honored Listener 18:28, 11 June 2007 (EDT)

Sources[edit]

I'd really like to see more sources used for this article. I've already seen some edits that object to some of the contents, and reverts that claim testing has been done without any source information. --Ratwar 13:07, 15 June 2007 (EDT)

Make no mistake: the PlayStation 3 is utterly superior in graphics to the Xbox 360 from what has been shown.
What really set the PS3 apart from the 360 was its lighting and shadow effects. The first tech demo showed light absorption and subsurface refraction, highlighting how different surfaces react differently to lighting.-Gamepro staff--Most Honored Listener 13:39, 15 June 2007 (EDT)
^^^^^just to let anybody know oblivion on ps3 will not let you play it unless you have 720i pixels or higher tv, which you cant get with the cables given with the ps3, so basically to some it up if your super dead broke but manage to get your hands on a ps3 like me you have to buy another seperate component cable and then have a tv which will support 720i and higher which fortunatley i dont have, so now i have a copy of the game a ps3 and a tv that doesnt play the game i'am just soo lucky p.s yes i cant afford a hd tv^^^^ — Unsigned comment by 87.74.41.212 (talk) at 03:05 on 4 July 2007
No offense but this is where common sense fall in, Don't but a PS3 and and even have a TV less than 5 years old. Buying a new low quality TV that will at least support use of the PS3--Most Honored Listener 02:16, 4 July 2007 (EDT)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The above is totally untrue. I have a 32 inch tube tv. 480i, from over ten yeras ago. I play Oblivion from my ps3 on it all the time. There is no limitation whatsoever on oblivion or any other PS3 game, from running in 480i mode. It just looks like crap. The above claim that you must have 720 is fanboy FUD. — Unsigned comment by 70.112.220.223 (talk) at 22:19 on 2 November 2007

Mods[edit]

I wish PS3 users could use the PC Mods.--Papito007 20:56, 19 July 2007 (EDT)

I think you can but you need to do some scriouse "Modding" to the PS3 and you would probably need to load the Unix/Linux OS--Most Honored Listener 21:22, 14 July 2007 (EDT)
LIES LIEs LIEs i have a ps3 and and old tv.. plays fine..ps3 hater — Unsigned comment by 76.196.11.114 (talk) at 23:19 on 15 July 2007
Excuse me? did you misplace the comment?--Most Honored Listener 19:59, 15 July 2007 (EDT)
Yes, with enough skill in C++ you could definitely make mods and plugins for the PS3 version of oblivion, maybe even make it possible to run on a system such as Ubuntu... But that would probably violate copyright laws... And the controls are very smooth on the Sixaxis, so I see no point in that. IHIMSELF 23:57, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
Plus, the PC Version is already backwards compatible with Linux, so the most you could get out of it would be prettier graphics and a whole slew of unofficial plugin problems. IHIMSELF 01:10, 24 June 2008 (EDT)
Without fear of a takedown notice from Sony or Bethesda, loading mods is in fact possible. Obviously mods installing higer resolution textures could cause memory problems and the like... but smaller ones like those that change the UI, and all of the official ones available for PC, work like a treat! Plug ins[edit]

I'm playing Oblivion on the PS3. Can I add plug ins to my game? If so how?--Papito007 15:42, 17 July 2007 (EDT)

currently the PS3 version doesn't have any plug-ins but Knights of the Nine which is pre-installed
SI will be available (most likely on the PS store) this September it is not known when the other plug-ins will be out for the PS3 yet though.--Most Honored Listener 21:12, 17 July 2007 (EDT)

DLC and Bethesda[edit]

I was simply referring to what Bethesda said that SI will not be available for download only to be bought as the GOTY forcing PS3 users who already own the game to buy it again.--Most Honored Listener 21:30, 26 July 2007 (EDT)

I know, but right above the Shivering Isle comment there is another that says "the PS3 does not have any downloadable content," and just below there is another that says there is "no confirmation on whether or not downloadable content will ever be available for the PS3." There is no need to say it again. --Eshe 21:59, 26 July 2007 (EDT)
Ok for some reason I though that was referring to something else I guess I am just to upset at Bethesda for not letting the PS3 users actually just be able to download content.--Most Honored Listener 22:15, 26 July 2007 (EDT)

fewer items and dialog[edit]

I have at one point played Oblivion for all the systems and I had noticed that on the PS3 version there are some thing that the NPCs will not say. IE. go away ashborn when you are a vampire. and several potions do not exist in the PS3 version I would like to see proof of this not being true. — Unsigned comment by Obliv4PS3 (talkcontribs)

Well, the phrase "be gone ashborn" doesn't exist in any version of Oblivion, so not hearing it while playing the PS3 version definitely does not make the PS3 unusual. The only phrase involving "ashborn" is "What do you want, ashborn?"
As for these potions that supposedely don't exist in the PS3 version, it's pretty hard for anyone to double check on that without more details on which potions you haven't seen. I'd say the burden of proof here really is on you here because every other indication is that the games are identical on the different platforms. And there is no logical reason why the developers would alter random details about the game before releasing it on PS3; it just increases their workload all around. --NepheleTalk 17:42, 20 August 2007 (EDT)
First of all the phrase ashborn is what everyone and I mean everyone says to be while I am a vampire in the 360 version and I am starting to believe that maybe the potions were added by a plug-in but the vendor outside kvatch was selling them. I will have to double check the name. — Unsigned comment by Obliv4PS3 (talkcontribs)
Then you'd better check what's wrong the 360 version of your game becase as I said the phrase "be gone ashborn" does not exist anywhere in the game. And the phrase "What do you want, ashborn" is a greeting used to greet Dunmer, not vampires (incidentally, only if the NPC's disposition is between 20 an 30). So if you're being called ashborn because your character is a vampire then your 360 version of the game is really messed up. --NepheleTalk 18:48, 20 August 2007 (EDT)
I guess because I am a dunmer and the vamparism took my personality down to the point of people referring to me as ash born and ash born being easily associated with vampires with the ash and all I can see where I made this mistake. but are there any potion that would be added by a plug-in and be available in places other than the associated plug-in? — Unsigned comment by Obliv4PS3 (talkcontribs) at 23:19 on 20 August 2007
Just because YOU haven't seen something yet, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That's part of the magic of random. Just because you haven't seen, say A Strong Potion of Absorption after 200 playing hours, doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist. --Saruuk 20:12, 20 August 2007 (EDT)
I quite relize that but this potion was VERY unique it had its own name which I can't remember what it was it was not like a strong potion or something but rather its own unique item with a combination of different effects. Further more I have played Oblivion for the PS3 for close to 1000 hours and haven't seen it once. yet in the first 5 hours of playing it for the 360 I have seen it countless times from loot to vendors. I --Most Honored Listener 20:35, 20 August 2007 (EDT)don't mean to be a sore thumb but these differences are making me wonder.
It's likely that the potions you found were from a mod or plug-in, if they are not simply potions you never found in the PS3 version. Thousands of people play the PS3 versions of the game, many of which have logged more hours than you, and this is the first I have ever heard of these purportedly "missing" items and NPC scripts. In any case, there isn't much use in reiterating your point if you do not produce at least the name of this potion you claim is missing from the PS3 version. I would advise you to take Nephele's advice and provide some real evidence that would support your claims. In fact, it would have been nice if you had done that in the first place, so this discussion might have been much shorter and less time-consuming. --Eshe 20:59, 20 August 2007 (EDT)

Save games for PS3[edit]

The PS3's quality is great, and my whole household is addicted to it. We fight over it and therein lies a problem. I installed knights of the Nine expansion and I was hoping to move a save game from the ps3 to the PC so that it's possible for two to play at the same time (without loosing 30+ hours of quests and story development)

Did Bethesda not realize that copying files was so easy between PS3 and PC as to not thing of this? i was disappointed to see that it looks as though the files are entirely different, AND (naturally, even after being renamed to .ess) they could not be loaded by my PC's oblivion. corrected save game. Here are the files that the PS3 stores:

  • PARAM.PFD: 32,768
  • PARAM.SFO: 2,736
  • ICON0.PNG: 69,188
  • PIC1.PNG: 1,141,138
  • SYS-DATA: 1,756,576
  • 5 File(s) 3,002,406 bytes

The sys-data cannot be renamed to .ess to play on the PC.

Does anybody have any information for this? I'm a programmer and if I had data details I would gladly program a converter and make it public domain.

Full details on the file format used by the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game are provided at Oblivion Mod:Save File Format. There's been a bit of discussion at Oblivion Mod talk:Save File Format#PS3 Save Files about the PS3 save file format. As I mentioned there, I strongly suspect that the save file format on the PS3 is fundamentally the same as that used by the other two platforms. But there might be a layer of security encryption (as on the Xbox), or it's possible that the .ess file has been split among two or three files on the PS3.
If you're willing to dig through the guts of the files, it should be possible to figure out from the info on Oblivion Mod:Save File Format whether the PS3 file format is comparable to the standard save file format. If you need any extra info, just ask :) --NepheleTalk 03:15, 31 August 2007 (EDT)
I would like to point out that the "Floating Paintbrushes" bug is still in the PS3 version of Oblivion, but that is only without the Shivering Isles Expansion Pack, which contains fixes for all of the bugs related to Paintbrushes (Floating Paintbrushes, Pendulum-like Paintbrush Jars). We are talking about Oblivion though, and with the original disc the glitches return, so this is technically irrelevant. I'm sorry if this looks awkward, I don't use wiki format very often, so please excuse (or correct, if you wish), any errors I have made. IHIMSELF 23:41, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
I would like to suggest adding content about the apparent unfixable bug existing on the GOTY version for PS3, specifically regarding the vampire cure. There is an instance wherein the NPC witch is not accepting the bloodgrass or is not recognizing the attempt.
The protagonist therefore is stuck playing the game as a vampire. There is no known fix or patch currrently in existence except to try to and save a file on a non-GOTY Oblivion version, which may then force the NPC witch to accept the bloodgrass. Full details on the vampire bug may be found elsewhere. — Unsigned comment by 203.167.75.51 (talk) at 18:57 on 10 June 2008
The "Other Differences" section states that oblivion games are not region coded, which is true for an HDTV as stated, however attempting to use a save from an NTSC copy of the game with a PAL copy of the game will not work, as the game does not recognise it as a save for that game. I will add this, since it seems pertinent to the other statement that files may be shared by usb stick, and this is one limitation of that.--Qeros 14:36, 1 September 2008 (EDT)

() "Saved Data can be copied onto an external standard USB storage device and used on a different console and/or an account unlike with the 360 version(s) of Oblivion." How do you do that? — Unsigned comment by 68.124.189.50 (talk) at 02:56 on 8 October 2008

Graphics Glitch[edit]

I am seeing a severe glitch in the graphics which shows up as an almost permanent halo around the player: 1. Cast any magic spell like restoration or detect life. 2. The immediate graphics which surround the player now remain and morph into large dots. 3. It appears on characters as well and soon after the game freezes. 4. It only starts to happen after day 350 or so. 5. I thought it might have been caused by cheats like obtaining the Shield Of Aegis so I reverted back to an earlier non-cheat save but it still appears.

Anybody else seen this?

I have also noticed that glitch; Along with the tendency of the game to freez when you get next to a building and sneak by pushing the two analog sticks together (reference to a "Master of Sneak" trick)I came in to relise this first when I was waiting for the Theives Guild man in the Waterfont District of the Imperial City, after the completion of the mission of the Bust... he never returned the following night so to waist time I tried the trick and the game froze and I tried the trick about 10 time and the resultes were the same, the game froze. GOTY vamparism[edit]

ive seen on youtube that there is a bug on the game of the yaer edition on ps3 that means you are unable to cure vamparism is this true ? Ryan6329 17:33, 25 September 2008 (EDT)

Unfortunately that's true. See this page for all the details. --Timenn < talk > 10:35, 26 September 2008 (EDT)

Using save files from the original release with the GOTY edition[edit]

The page states, "Saves from the standard PS3 Oblivion will function however, will not be altered/patched by the installation of GOTY disc. Therefore, will suffer from significantly reduced FPS upon installation of the SI, and the game engine will rapidly use up all available OBJECT:ID resources inevitably corrupting the save within 100-300 hours." Is this true/confirmed? There's no reference to back this up. I traded my copy of Oblivion for the GOTY edition (the one with Shivering Isles included) and continued to use the same save files from the original game. I have certainly not seen any frame rate problems, so I'm not sure whether to expect the OBJECT:ID problem as well. HappySpaceInvdr 05:59, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

you to replicate items with scrolls .
As many of you know..there is a glitch in the game that allows you to replicate items with scrolls. There is also a glitch that by doing the replicate item glitch with only 2 scrolls while simultaneously having a pair of the exact same enchanted items. You have one of the items equipped and the other unequipped. the best way to do this is by replicateing the enchanted item( Make sure you only have 2 of the enchanted item in your inventory) Then while having one of the 2 enchanted item equipped , you do the replicate item glitch on the unequipped enchanted item. This will make you drop both of the enchanted items and you will not be able to equip that item again . But... the enchantment will still be in effect and will be irreversible, so it is recommended that you do not do this with the chameleon or night-eye enchantments as you will probably not want your game to be blue or have an invisible character always. So you can do this repeatedly layering yourself with enchantments. I myself replicated a bunch of rings and grand soul gems and made speed + 10 rings until my speed got to 600 (I got bored and stopped ) and my strength to 280 something so i can carry 1500 pound" of stuff. your skills to 100. unfortunately when "Layering skills " you don't get the full benefit however with blade, blunt, and Marksmenship you still get maximum weapon damage if you "Layer " your skills to 100. Also you can still jump high with acrobatics. I know this works on the Ps3 version on all current patches Shivering Isles included. I hope I've been helpful and informative.

it says[edit]

under gameplay it says there is no way to always run but if you put a rubber band around your controller you can always run Thedrunknord 12:41, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Hahaha. There's a lot of things you can do with rubber bands or wedging small items between a button and the frame around it. I think what's meant is that there's nothing built into the game that'll allow you to always run. Robin Hoodtalk 16:06, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
I wish there was a way to always walk besides barely pressing the stick. I stupidly chose Athletics as a Major Skill and I'm getting sick of it leveling up. Speaking of running, I think the whole Athletics and Acrobatics leveled up past a certain point becomes ridiculous! And since everyone else levels up with you, when you're on a quest and following NPCs in a dungeon, they take off so fast you can easily lose sight of them. I do hope they don't allow the height of jumping and speed of running to go so ridiculously overboard with Skyrim! Anyone else agree? --D. Gemini 20:19, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Save games over 4300K[edit]

As a character accumulates wealth and experience, the size of his save game increases. I have found that when it's larger than 4300 KB, it reliably locks up the PS3 console. The only button that works after that is the power button on the console. This bug is unique to the PS3, right? Is there coverage somewhere of how to lessen the size of save games? Thundre 11:22, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

This post is really old now, but I can confirm that my save file is nearly 5000KB and apart from the occasional freeze the playstation and the game are fine.— Unsigned comment by 86.170.24.139 (talk) at 18:35 on 20 February 2012
Thanks for the data point. I have heard that on Skyrim, the size at which the game fails varies from console to console. One guy on the Bethsoft forums claims that after he replaced his PS3 HD with a SSD he got it up to 30M. Thundre 08:38, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
It appears that PS3 files over 6300 will cause the game to not be able to load when transitioning areas where a loading scree hits. I cannot leave my house in Chorral, and my save file is 6309 KB. I am uncertain if this is from keeping several different magic items, the almost1,000,000 gold, lots of alchemical items, or spell effects. I have stripped almost all gear off, and will attempt to sell items, as well as cut my gold down. I will report back as soon as I have an answer. Unless someone here has had the same experience. UPDATE: fast travel works. Will keep working on it. — Unsigned comment by 97.84.175.166 (talk) at 17:32 on 24 February 2013

Content[edit]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's now official there will never be any new content released for the PS3 version of Oblivion. I'm 95% sure I read that on the bethblog under the article about the new anniversary edition of Oblivion. If true, someone should change the "Content" section of the PS3 article. Thanks. --D. Cannot Move[edit]

This just started today. I can't walk. Moving the stick does nothing. If I sneak my view does not change. I can switch to third person view and see that my pose does not change if I sneak. I can jump, turn, and even mount a horse if one is within reach. Once mounted I can ride. I can fast travel and open doors if they are within reach. But I cannot walk or run. Encumbrance is not an issue.

I have tried loading older saves, quitting and relaunching, and shutting down the console. None of these work. The game is basically dead to me with this problem. Anyone have a solution?

Sounds like a glitch. Make sure that you have all the patches installed. Try making a new character, if that doesn't work you might be able to reasign controls from the menu. You should also try the official Bethesda website for any solutions. Sorry I can't help more. RIM 21:01, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
That sounds like what happens if you're carrying too much weight... except for the sneak part. But you say it's not an encumbrance issue.
It could be a hardware failure. In that case, a different controller would fix the problem. Thundre 21:10, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
p.s. Oblivion patches? On a PS3? I didn't think they existed. Thundre 21:11, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Official plugins from disc?[edit]

So, I have the CD-ROM with all the official plugins on it, I wonder if I drop it into the PS3, would it install them? I like my PC version, but my comp s old and clunky, while my PS3 is connected to a nice HDTV. Has anyone tried it? FMPhoenixHawk (talk) 14:06, 2 July 2013 (GMT)

I haven't personally tried it, but PC and PS3 encode information differently, so it wouldn't work. --AN|L (talk) 14:33, 2 July 2013 (GMT)

Skill Bug[edit]

So, replaying on the PS3, and I cannot train more than one skill per level with a trainer. GOTY edition. I trained my Armorer skill at level 2 in e Imperial City. Then I bumped into e Acrobatics trainer and it told me I had already trained five times for that skill. I then rested and leveled to third, and could train Acrobatics, but not Armorer.
