Walkthrough[edit]
There are two ways to start this quest: Find Tachlan's journal (which is in his house in Kathar), or find Tachlan himself outside the Temple of Am'nan. Once you do either of those, you'll be prompted to find six golden Mephala statuettes so that you can unlock the entrance. The statuettes are found in the following locations:
- On a table in the Bandit Camp.
- On an altar in the Underground River.
- In a cart in the Sandcrawler Burrow.
- In a niche behind the leader's bed in the Desert Bandit Camp.
- Beside the sarcophagus in the Cave Ruins.
- On the makeshift bier at the end of the Spider Cave.
When you find all six, place them on the pedestals. Tachlan will wait outside while you go into the tomb and grab the dagger, whereupon a bunch of skeletons will appear. When you kill them all, Tachlan will come down and take the dagger from you and try to kill you with it. Since it hasn't been purified, however, it immediately kills him instead.
According to his notes, there are two places where the blade can be purified. One is collapsed and inaccessible; the other is an old mine (quest markers point to both; neither has a map marker, despite what the journal entry says). Go to the end of the mine, where you'll find a basin of water; place the dagger in it, and it will be purified and safe to use.
Journal Entries[edit]

---|---|---|
Stage | Finishes Quest | Journal Entry |
10 | I found Tachlan's journal in Kathar. It contains the locations of six golden statuettes of Mephala. Moreover, the author seems to know how they are to be used. He left for the temple of Am'nan. | |
20 | I met Tachlan, a fairly self-absorbed Dunmer, in front of the temple of Am'nan. He wants me to find six golden statuettes of Mephala for him. | |
30 | Thanks to my investigative skill, I already have all the golden statuettes in my possession. I need only hand them over to Tachlan. or |
|
40 | Tachlan want me to use the golden statuettes. Apparently he's afraid of traps; I should exercise caution. | |
70 | Tachlan wants to wait at the temple entrance, while I should proceed and test the waters. | |
100 | Tachlan is dead. He died because he wanted to use the strange blade in battle. Maybe I'll find something with him that gives me insight as to what is actually happening. | |
110 | Apparently the dagger Soulblade killed Tachlan when he tried to wield it in battle. According to his records, he has long sought after Soulblade until he finally found it in the temple. However, he must have known that it was cursed, for he writes that the blade must be bathed in "Mephala-blessed water" before it can be carried safely. That water would have been blessed in two temples. I have marked the sites on my map. | |
115 | This temple seems to be buried. No advancement is possible here. I just hope that the other temple is in better condition. | |
120 | I cleaned the Soulblade in Mephala-blessed water, which means that I can now use the dagger in combat without danger. | |
200 | Tachlan didn't want to take the risk that I wouldn't tell anyone about our meeting. When I told him that I had no interest in helping him, he attacked me. |
- The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 50, 60, 80, 90, 95, 111.
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage ODDDesertStatsQuest stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
