Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Kidnapping Is a Fine Art[edit]

Make your way to Chorrol and visit your old friend Modryn Oreyn. By now, the Blackwood Company is getting out of hand, and they must be brought down for the good of the Fighters Guild and the general public. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell where to start or what the source of their power is. Modryn tells you that a high-ranking member is currently holed up in the nearby Glademist Cave and that kidnapping him could yield valuable information. As this particular Argonian is very high up the chain of command and well guarded, however, he will make a difficult target.

Hand Me the Calipers[edit]

Head to Glademist Cave, which is northeast of Chorrol along the Orange Road. Make your way inside and fight your way through the fairly linear dungeon (see the place page for full walkthrough info). You will need to fight past seven well-equipped Blackwood Company Guards until you reach the final chamber, where you will find Ajum-Kajin. As long as all of his guards are dead, he will reluctantly follow you back to Chorrol.

Make your way back to Modryn's house and tell him that you've brought Ajum-Kajin with you. Modryn orders you to sit the Argonian down and get the information you need about Blackwood from him one way or another. Once you tell Ajum-Kajin to sit down, he'll immediately realize what your plans are, giving you the silent treatment from here on in. After he sits down, you have two choices to gather information from him: sweet-talking him or beating his life out on the wall.

Option 1: Speech Deception[edit]

Speak with Ajum-Kajin and raise his disposition up to 90. This can be accomplished through Persuasion, Charm spells or bribes. Once he is friendly enough with you, exit his dialogue screen (which initially features no conversation topics) and you'll receive a journal update stating he is ready to talk. Ask him all three questions at your disposal: the size of the Company, its leader's name and the source of its strength. He will answer only the first, informing you that the Company is now one hundred strong. Exit the talk screen and you'll once more receive a journal update stating he is ready to talk again. Ask him the remaining two questions, of which he will again answer only the first, betraying the name of his leader: Ri'Zakar.

Option 2: Painting the Walls Red[edit]

For this method, a fists-only approach works best, as Ajum-Kajin may inadvertently die from weapon attacks before he answers all your questions. After a few decent licks, you'll receive a journal update stating he is ready to talk. Ask him all three questions (see option above for detail), of which he will answer only the first. Exit the dialogue screen and after a few more blows, you'll get another journal update stating he is ready to spill something other than blood. Ask him the remaining two questions, of which he will again only answer the first.

Loyalty Burns[edit]

After Ajum-Kajin has answered two of your questions he will choose suicide over further betrayal. Using his hidden Blackwood Ring of Silence, he quickly burns himself alive on the spot.

After the Argonian roasts, Modryn Oreyn is only partly satisfied by the intelligence gathered: the Company's source of strength is still a mystery. He tells you that the next step is thus to infiltrate the Company's ranks so you can investigate the answer to that final question. He also rewards you with a leveled amulet called the Amulet of Interrogation, which fortifies Hand to Hand and Speechcraft (note that due to a bug you will actually receive the most powerful version of this amulet between levels 5-9). You do not receive any gold reward or fame for this quest, though you will find some gold on Ajum-Kajin's corpse (including any gold you may have previously used to bribe him).

If you killed Ajum-Kajin, Oreyn will be displeased and will not reward you with the amulet.

Bugs[edit]

  • The Amulet of Interrogation provided as a reward for this quest is a leveled item, but the levels are out of order. You will receive the best amulet if you are between levels 5 and 9, and becomes less powerful once you reach level 10. Bear in mind, however, that the reward for Mystery at Harlun's Watch is similarly bugged, with the best reward after level 10. See Quest Timing for an overview of all the Fighters Guild quests with unusually leveled items.
  • Sometimes, Ajum-Kajin will get stuck behind the chair when you tell him to sit down.
    • If this happens, use the console to disable him, then use the console again to enable him. He should show up next to you, and not be trapped behind the chair.
  • If you use a spell or an item with the Damage Fatigue effect, Ajum-Kajin will be knocked down, then will stand up. He will not sit down again and you cannot talk to him. The only way to complete the quest is to kill him, sacrificing the reward.

Journal Entries[edit]

Information Gathering (FGD07Kidnap)
Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
5 I have been promoted to the rank of Champion of the Fighters Guild. I'm told that Modryn Oreyn is looking for me, and I should speak with him as soon as possible.
10 I have spoken to Modryn Oreyn, who tells me that, although he has been expelled from the Fighters Guild, he will still work to restore its honor. To that end, he wants me to go to the Glademist Cave and capture a Blackwood Company leader, Ajum-Kajin.
20 I have found Ajum-Kajin, cowering in his Blackwood Company hideout. I must convince him to return with me.
30 Ajum-Kajin will now return with me to Modryn Oreyn's house.
40 Oreyn would like me to learn some things from Ajum-Kajin: how large the Blackwood Company is; who leads the Company; and what is the source of their power. Oreyn has told me I am to use whatever means necessary to get this information.
45 It appears Ajum-Kajin may be ready to give me information.
50 I've learned that the Blackwood Company is over 100 strong, and growing every day. I must find out who leads them.
55 It looks like Ajum-Kajin is ready to tell me more. I should question him.
60 I've learned their leader is Ri'Zakar. I must now learn the source of their power, what gives them such courage in battle.
70 Ajum-Kajin seems unwilling to answer me as to the source of the Blackwood Company's power. I will have to persuade him further.
80 Rather than divulge the Blackwood Company's secret, Ajum-Kajin has killed himself. I should speak with Oreyn for further instruction.
100 Finishes quest☑ Though we did not get all of the answers we had hoped for, Oreyn is pleased with the information we gained.
105 Finishes quest☑ Ajum-Kajin has died. I will be unable to learn any more from him. Oreyn is unhappy I took the interrogation too far.
Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On PC It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage FGD07Kidnap stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
