Reman III was the fifth and last emperor of the Reman Dynasty. His forty-three-year reign was marked by the long and bloody conflict known as the Four-Score War against Morrowind. In 1E 2920, Reman III negotiated a treaty with Vivec, one of the god-kings of Morrowind, to end the war; however, the Emperor was assassinated by the Morag Tong before it could be signed and ratified.[1][2][3] His death marked the end of the Reman Dynasty, and only sixteen days after his assassination, his potentate Versidue-Shaie proclaimed the end of the First Era and the beginning of the Second Era.[2]
Biography[edit]
Reman was born in 1E 2863. In 1E 2877, Emperor Brazollus Dor suddenly died, so Reman was crowned emperor at the age of fourteen.[4] Brazollus' estate, known as Villa Doria, had served as the Imperial Court for the twenty years preceding Reman III's reign, but shortly after his accession, Reman returned the Imperial Court to the Imperial City so that he could exercise power in his own name.[5]
At some point prior to 1E 2899, he married Tavia, who came from a wealthy background and had powerful allies in Colovia.[6][7][8] With Tavia, he had a son, Juilek.[9][10] In 1E 2899, the Emperor had Tavia imprisoned in the city of Gideon for purportedly plotting against him.[8][6] For the next fourteen years, the Empress was moved from castle to castle, until she was finally imprisoned at Castle Giovesse in 1E 2913.[7][9][11][UOL 1]
At some point during his reign, Reman III hunted down and slew dragons with his Dragonguard bodyguards.[12]
By the time of Reman III's accession, the Four-Score War with Morrowind had been ongoing for thirty-seven years, and the conflict continued for the remainder of his reign.[13] During the Four-Score War, he commanded the rearguard of the Imperial Army at the Battle of Bodrum on 20 First Seed, 1E 2920.[14] At the Battle of Bodrum, the Imperial Army was defeated when the commander of the Dunmer army, Vivec, ordered his battlemages to cast spells at a dam built on the Pryai River, destroying the dam, washing away the Imperial vanguard, and forcing the Emperor to order the remains of the army to retreat.[14] In Sun's Height, after Vivec agreed to the terms of a peace treaty that Juilek negotiated, Reman III ordered the Imperial Army to attack and capture the strategically located fortress of Black Gate.[6][15] On 31 Last Seed, Juilek was killed.[6] In Frostfall, the Emperor met Vivec at Bodrum to negotiate a peace treaty.[1] On 6 Sun's Dusk, he and Vivec agreed on the final terms of the treaty and planned to sign it one month later at the Imperial Palace.[1]
On 6 Evening Star, Reman III was assassinated by the Morag Tong in the audience chamber of the Imperial Palace.[2][3][4][16] It was believed that his potentate, Versidue-Shaie, ordered the assassination.[2][17][18] On 8 Evening Star, Versidue-Shaie and Vivec agreed to the Cervant Truce, ending the Four-Score War.[2][19] Reman III's death left the Empire with no heirs, so on 22 Evening Star, Versidue-Shaie proclaimed that Reman's line was dead and that he would be taking over rulership of the Empire but retaining his title of potentate.[2][16] The Potentate also proclaimed the end of the First Era and the beginning of the Second Era.[2] After this, the Second Empire entered the period known as the Akaviri Potentate.[10][20][17]
He was entombed with the Amulet of Kings in the innermost chamber of the Tomb of the Reman Emperors in Sancre Tor.[21][22][23] Talos Stormcrown reputedly recovered the Amulet of Kings from the tomb of Reman III during the Sack of Sancre Tor in 2E 852.[23][24]
