Echo Cave is an icy, partially flooded natural cave network found far west of Bruma, in the Echo Cliffs region of Cyrodiil's Jerall Mountains.
Like all natural caves, the tunnels that make up Echo Cave once served as the capillaries of Nirn, pulsing with the divine essence of the Aedra.[1] It was occupied at some point by the Ayleids, who left behind ruined structures in its subterranean passages.[2] The name of the cave has nothing to do with reflected sound, and instead refers to the undead who have long haunted its chilly depths like an unholy echo of the living.[1] It extends deep underground, and includes a subterranean canyon known as the Echo Passages.[3]
History[edit]
Circa 2E 582, a group of adventurers journeyed to Echo Cave, believing the rumors of hauntings and undead hordes to be overblown.[4] They set up camp at the entrance after dispatching the skeletons outside the cave,[4] but ultimately fell victim to the undead, becoming food for the rancid zombies inhabiting the cave.[5] The cave was haunted at this time by the wraith of Sargos Grent; this powerful spirit was ultimately banished by passing Alliance War soldiers.[2]
Circa 3E 433, the Order of the Black Worm took up occupation of Echo Cave as a base of operations when Mannimarco returned to the affairs of the living. The King of Worms established himself in the Necromancer's Chamber deep within the cave, where he awaited the arrival of Arch-Mage Hannibal Traven of the Mages Guild, whose soul he planned to capture for study. He had done this to several other Arch-Mages throughout history in order to learn the secrets of their magical power, and attempted to draw Traven out by launching attacks on the Mages Guild all across Cyrodiil.[6] This culminated in Mannimarco personally destroying the guildhall in Bruma, claiming the souls of the guild mages and burning down the wooden building; he left one mage alive to bring word to Traven that he was based in Echo Cave.[7] However, Traven tricked him, sacrificing his own soul and trapping it within a colossal black soul gem created by the necromancers in order to shield the Hero of Kvatch from Mannimarco's powerful magic. With this gem, the Hero was able to confront Mannimarco in Echo Cave and defeat him.[8]
