Roland Wickhart

Roland Wickhart is a Breton destruction mage and a member of the Bruma Synod Conclave.

During Whispers of the Mountain, Cadius Venucius will ask you to interrogate Roland during your investigations in the appearance of mysterious objects in the Conclave. Roland also owes Razzada the Resplendent some money for a purchase, which the charlatan enchanter will task you with recovering.

After waking up at 7am, Roland has a quick breakfast before spending the next two hours practicing spells in the alchemy room of the Conclave. Between 10am and 2pm, he can be found attending to his duties around the ground floor, while from 2pm to midnight he will be found practicing his alchemy skills, with just a short, one-hour break for dinner at 6pm.

He wears Synod robes, a circlet of major destruction and a pair of leather boots. He also carries the key to the Conclave, the spell tome Fire Rune and up to three rare ingredients. As well as being armed with an iron dagger, Roland is also able to cast the spells Firebolt, Flame Cloak, Flames, Ice Storm and Wall of Flames.

Dialogue[edit]

Roland's awkwardness is immediately on display when he greets you:

"I'm Roland Wickhart. Err, hello."
"How can I help?"
"Something you need from me?"

You can then ask him a few questions:

What do you do here?
"Me? I'm the resident Destruction expert here. Well, if you want to call me an expert. I wouldn't. I'm still learning. Honing my craft, as they say. My ultimate goal is to perfect the art of defensive spellcasting. I want to be able to conjure the raw power of the combative forces of nature and beyond, at will! But that'll have to come later. Hopefully sooner-later, rather than later-later."
What do you think about the College of Whispers?
"I... think the same as everyone else around here about them."
Which is...?
"That they're another magical organization that the Synod have no standing relationship with."
Okay, then. Let's drop the subject.
"Yes, dropping this topic would be best. Nothing good can come of it."
Can you teach me spells?
"Destruction spells? Uh, no, not really. If you really want to learn, you'd have to join up with us before I can show you what I know. Nobody here is even allowed to teach you the advanced stuff, though, Synod or not. Goes against regulations. Not that I've really reached the advanced stage yet myself, anyway."
Can I join the Synod?
"Sure, just go ask Cadius. He's the one who started me off on my road to the Synod."

When leaving conversation he will say:

"Okay, well, see you."
"Alright then."

Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]

Whispers of the Mountain[edit]

You will first meet Roland when entering the Conclave and finding him puzzling over an Ayleid statue in the entry hall along with Cadius Venucius and Elintius Rentilia:

Elintius: "Indeed, this is odd! And you say it just appeared here out of thin air?"
Roland: "It isn't mine, that's for sure. Where do you think it came from?"
Cadius: "What is with this commotion? Where did what come from? Who made this mess?"
Elintius: "That's the thing... we don't know."
Roland: "It just appeared out of thin air. Maybe that stranger over there has something to do with it."

After you've been interrogated by Cadius, he will order Roland to clean everything up:

Cadius: "Attendant, clean up this mess, would you? And take that statue to the back for examination."
Roland: "Er, yes, First Adjunct."

Cadius will then ask you to investigate the appearance of mysterious objects, starting by speaking to Roland. Follow him to the storage room where he is taking the statue and ask him:

Cadius wants to know if you've found anything unusual about the statue.
"Anything unusual? Er, well, it's hard to tell, to be honest. I'm not exactly the most experienced mage in this area, but..."
But what?
"But, I did notice that it looks an awful lot like an Ayleid design. Haven't you seen the massive statues by the entrances of their ruins? I also know that Ayleid statues this portable and small would be very valuable, and therefore would probably all have been scavenged from the ruins."
Why would an Ayleid artifact appear in the conclave?
"My theory? I think someone sent it here as a test, someone who has access to valuable artifacts such as this; that they plan to come get it back. I think someone is going to try teleporting here using the same teleportation, er, technique. We should..."
What's your point?
"My point is that no one would so easily give this up. Whoever sent this here must have planned to come get it at some point. I think this was a test, and that someone is going to try teleporting here using this same teleportation, er, technique. We should..."

At this point another item will appear nearby, so Roland will prompt you to return to Cadius:

"I'm going to continue studying this thing. You might want to tell Cadius that this doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon."

Payments for Razzada[edit]

After having been tasked by Razzada the Resplendent to collect dues from various customers, you can pay Roland a visit to obtain the cash. He will prove the most amenable of the debtors:

I'm here to collect payment for Razzada.
"Oh! I'm sorry. Completely slipped my mind. Here you go."

Conversations[edit]

While in the Conclave, you may overhear Roland and Elintius Rentilia conversing:

Roland: "Elintius, you got a free minute?"
Elintius: "Always for a fellow mage, Roland."
Roland: "Well, I was curious about the Journeyman level Electrocution spell you showed me the other day. For instance, let's say I tried to cast it myself and it didn't cast quite the way yours did..."
Elintius: "You shocked yourself, didn't you Roland? I wondered why it smelt of burnt hair in the conclave!"
Roland: "Well... yes."
Elintius: "Don't you worry, we'll find a good, secluded, area of the Jeralls later to practice in, my friend. We'll make sure you stop singeing your... features."
