Atul

Atul, an Orc citizen, is the wife of mercenary Dumrag gro-Morrg. She was kidnapped months ago and her husband will ask for your help in finding her during the related quest. She will only appear from stage 130, wears fine clothes and fine boots, and is armed with an iron dagger.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

When meeting Dumrag at The Restful Watchman, he will explain what happened:

"I'd been hired by some anonymous noble to clear out a cave full of bandits near Bruma. Offered some nice coin, too. My wife came with me. We're battle-partners. Things were going well, until we were ambushed. Bandit reinforcements showed up out of nowhere, flanking us the way we came. They bound us and gagged us, left us disarmed and defeated. They left with my wife, and left me to die. I managed to escape my captivity, but when I got back to the cave they'd gone. All of them. Including my wife. I've been searching for her for damn near a whole year now, no success."

As it turns out, the story is more complicated. Once you have evidence incriminating Simund Gautierre for the kidnapping and search his manor house, you will find Atul and Simund in the basement discussing their love and secret relationship.

Simund: "Today went better than expected, I suppose. But some nosy type came asking around, about mercenaries and bandits and payments. I told you the brute was back in town, and now it seems he's got a lackey who's on our scent. I even felt the need to barricade us in here for protection. This constant running and hiding is..."
Atul: "I know. This is... I don't know. This is still so strange, it's hard wrapping my head around it sometimes."
Simund: "Yes, I know what you mean, dear. But sometimes things just happen and you're foolish to fight back. It's unfortunate that we have to keep our relationship a secret as we do, but what choice do we have?"
Atul: "Quiet now, Simund. Just relax."

After a while, a furious Dumrag will butt in:

Dumrag: "You sneaky, slimy, slithering bastard. Here, with my wife. My... wife. You deviant, backstabbing..."
Simund: "She's mine, Dumrag! She loves me!"
Dumrag: "Your lies can't save you now, you ignorant son of a-"
Atul: "It's true, Dumrag. I... love him."
Dumrag: "Atul, you... faithless wretch! How dare you? How dare you forsake me so brazenly for this corrupt, spineless..."
Simund: "Enough of this. Atul loves me. She no longer loves you. You must come to terms with that, Orc. Now, leave our home and never bother me, or her, ever again."

If you convince Dumrag to accept the facts and leave, Atul will move in and sleep all day in the first-floor bedroom of the mansion. If you suggest he kills Simund, he will move towards Simund, ignoring Atul's pleas:

"No! Get away from Simund, you blood-crazed fool!"

After this, she will angrily run away:

"Dumrag's a murderous killer and you're little better. Leave me."

You will later learn from Dumrag that she left him again, as he will tell you after you help him fight off some ogres in the wilderness:

What happened with your wife?
"She ran off after the confrontation in Gautierre's manor. No idea where she is now. That debacle taught me a lot, though. Clearly she wasn't happy with me. Maybe going our separate ways is for the best."

Finally, if you leave Dumrag to make his own choice he will slay both lovers in his rage.

Bugs[edit]

  • Atul was meant to eat meals at 7am and 7pm, and spend some time wandering around the manor, but as her sleeping package has no set times and is first in the load order, that is all she ends up doing. ?
